Legacy Making First Big Purchase


(from Sports Business Journal, November 12, 2012)  Since coming together last January, The Legacy Agency (TLA) is making its first big business move, acquiring Peter Greenberg & Associates.  Together, the agents will now represent 60 Major League Baseball players and 70 Minor League Baseball players.  The new acquisition will bring in big names such as Jose Reyes and Johan Santana.  CEO of TLA, Michael Principe, comments on the decision by saying, “We have always planned on creating a market leader in baseball.”  The two brothers, Peter and Edward Greenberg, will operate alongside TLA’s baseball agents, Greg Genske, Scott Parker, and Brian Peters.  Genske expresses his fondness of Greenberg’s work stating, “Peter is an excellent agent who has demonstrated that he can negotiate contracts at the highest level, while maintaining the highest level of integrity.”

Ever since the Greenberg brothers formed their agency in 1997, they utilize their fluent Spanish speaking skills, serving primarily Spanish-speaking clients.  This  includes athletes from Panama, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic.  “Peter Greenberg has been really successful operating in markets we don’t really operate in.  It’s a really good partnership,” Genske says as he explains the complimentary benefits of the acquisition.  Principe emphasized the importance of this new potential growth saying, “We’ve identified Latin America as a growth opportunity, as highlighted by the number of Latin Americans in the MLB ranks and the larger number in the minors.  The Greenbergs accelerate our Latin American plans and make us an overnight leader in that growing market.”

TLA plans to move forward with the Greenbergs to focus on maintaining their clients’ high salaries while representing these premier players for their on-the-field work.  Principe ensures that this new partnership will not have the same negative outcome that SFX Sports had.  Under Principe’s direction, SFX Sports failed mainly because of a personality clash with big-name agents, unwilling to cooperate with one another.  The Legacy Agency and Peter Greenberg & Associates will utilize each other’s skills and their 10 year friendship to make The Legacy Agency an even more successful representation group.
