USA Gymnastics Tour Sticks It

Olympics Day 4 - Gymnastics - Artistic

(from Venues Today, November 26, 2012) The Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions tour ended Nov. 17 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., after playing a total of 40 cities over 10 weeks. Their most successful date earned a total gross of $592,700 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and selling over 11,000 tickets to the performance. Tickets to these events cost anywhere between $25 and $200 for most dates.

“Their performances were extraordinary, but the commitment to the tour and its marketing and public relations, and to visiting local groups in each city and taking the time to become part of the fabric of every community they visited is just something that doesn’t happen enough in this industry,” said Bob Newman, AEG Facilities President. He credited the athletes’ excellent participation with these community events for bringing in strong sales. Three  of the 40 total dates were sold out.

Some of the 2012 Olympic team gold medalists made appearances on television shows such as “Ellen,” “Today,” or “The Colbert Report,” as well as many community appearances in each city.

“You could tell that there’s a special relationship between the athletes and the fans,” said Newman, “that relationship started before the Olympics, was reinforced at the Olympics, but was even further reinforced by the athletes’ commitment in supporting every community they visited.”

Though this tour was moderately short, it was able to span most of the country. Playing in four cities per week from September to November is something that many tours don’t do. “This is a unique tour in that it goes coast to coast, corner to corner in a very short time period,” Newman continued, “it’s certainly time sensitive, but these athletes have long careers still ahead of them and you’re asking them to pause their normal training routines.”

According to Newman the 2016 Olympic tour will be even more thought out.  The 2016 Olympics will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
