How Target Scored Two Exclusive Bonus Tracks on Justin Timberlake’s ’20/20 Experience’

2020EXPERIENCE

(from Billboard.biz, February 14, 2013) As if Justin Timberlake’s television debut of his hit single, “Suit and Tie,” performed on the Grammys, wasn’t enough to get his fans wanting more; Target has announced the exciting news that they will be carrying an exclusive deluxe version of Justin Timberlake’s anticipated album, The 20/20 Experience. Only available at Target stores, the exclusive album will be released March 19.

Justin and Target seem to have a “history” that dates back to 2003. That’s the year Target sponsored Timberlake’s tour with Christina Aguilera, The Justified and Stripped Tour, and a full-length exclusive compilation CD that featured unreleased tracks from both artists. The relationship continued in 2010 when Target partnered with Timberlake’s fashion line, William, for a special Target collection during the holidays.

Anne Stanchfield, Target’s Divisional Merchandise Manager of Entertainment, said, “Target strives to be on trend, on time. We look for unexpected ways to connect with our guest, so we were excited to unveil our partnership with Justin through the commercial and social media buss before and after his performance [on the Grammys].” Everyone who was involved with the commercial, which was filmed at the end of January, knew the Grammys would be a big moment to announce the partnership; therefore, confidentiality was taken very seriously.

Again this year, Target was the exclusive retail sponsor for the Grammys. The ceremony market Stanchfield’s first Grammy week with her new role at Target, just becoming head music buyer in January.

In addition to Justin Timberlake, Target is currently selling exclusive albums for Taylor Swift, Pink, One Direction, Tony Bennett, and Josh Groban.
